Our Maui study...

At times, learning just comes from nowhere!
We were talking about the name of our city (Christchurch) and some Weka learners were confusing it with of the name of our country (New Zealand). So we looked at a map of New Zealand and pointed out where our city, Christchurch, was on the map.
The map we used happened to have the names of the North and South Island in Maori (Te Ika a Maui and Te Wai Pounamu). We talked about what these meant in English (The fish of Maui and The Waters of Greenstone). I remembered that we had a special piece of Pounamu in our office foyer which was gifted to the school when the new office was officially opened many years ago.
The children in Weka were interested in seeing the piece of Pounamu, so we all tramped across to the office to have a look at it. While we were there, we read a book about Taonga (precious things) and we talked about the fact that Pounamu is taonga.
When we returned to class, we found a book containing the legend of 'The Fish of Maui'. The Weka learners were really into finding out more about Maui. Over the next few days, we read lots of stories about Maui.
To celebrate our new learning about Maui, the children created amazing paintings of some of the characters they had discovered and learned about.
Here are pictures of them being created. I will take photos of the finished products which look really incredible.

Treasure under the house

Sometimes, exciting things happen...

This student's family was doing some renovations at their home and under the floor, they found some old coins.

One of the coins was over a hundred years old!

There were pennies and a half penny.  They had pictures of Queen Victoria and King George V on the back.

What an exciting find!

Monarchs in the Park

Sam's mum came to school one day last term and said that Monarch butterflies were swarming in a park in Avonside and she wanted to take Sam to see them. He was so lucky to see such a special event and we were lucky too, because he took the class camera to capture some of the action. The trees were filled with butterflies and Sam managed to bring one that had died back to school so we could get a close up look at a Monarch. The next day, we went online to learn about how to tell the difference between boy and girl Monarch butterflies. We learned that the girls have thicker black lines on their wings. Thanks to Sam and his mum for helping us with this learning.

We love new students!

We love to introduce new students in Weka. We welcome this awesome new learner to Weka from the start of Term 3.  We can't wait!

Some artworks from Weka

Here's some more lovely pics from the Weka students - drawn during the reading programme.  Nice work, team.
