Welcome to our Blog!

We are all 5 years old and go to Ladbrooks School. We love to learn and we enjoy having fun with our class at our school.

What the CIRCLES group did...

The circles were learning about the numbers to 10 and made them with play dough.  It was messy and fun!

Good job, Circles!

When we play ROCKETS...

We sometimes play rockets in Weka.

This is how you play:

1. Sit in a circle around the edge of the mat.
2. Throw the die (dice)
3. Look at the number on the die
4. Decide which room in the rocket it will go into

(Note: The numbers have to get bigger each time from the 1 in the fire to the 6 in the pointy part of the rocket. No one knows what numbers they will throw so it is a bit of a gamble where you place your numbers. You might get most of your rooms filled up and then throw a number that doesn't fit the pattern!)

5. Write the number in a room
6. Keep throwing the die and trying to put the numbers into rooms. The number MUST be larger than the number below them, but lower than the one above. If it can't fit, you have to draw an X in a room - no score for Xs.)
7. Once all rooms are filled, count up your total rooms filled with number. The top score for our game was 4.

We played 3 games of rocket and we got a score of 4 in every game! That's hard to do! We had to have a big celebration after that!

Try the game at home. It's fun! (You can also play with 2 dice to make it more of a challenge...)

ART DAY #1

A few years ago, we had 'art days' at our school. The staff really enjoyed it and lots of children still remember the awesome time they had using lots of different media to create amazing art works.

We've decided to do it all again!

Here's some images from the time spent with me in Toroa.

We are working on FELTING.

First, we looked at lots of images of different uses of felt. We asked ourselves some questions as we viewed them: What can we see? Who might have used these? Why were they important? How were they made?
We talked about our ideas and learned some interesting things about how felt is created. We also learned how in history the process MAY have been accidentally stumbled upon by St. Christopher!
We looked at some images on the data projector of how to make felt balls.
We learned to use new vocabulary - roving, barbs, dunk, 90 degrees.
Finally, we made felt balls. We needed to carefully follow a process to make them successfully and it was difficult - we really needed to use our muscles!

It was a great (but exhausting!) day!

Please... if you see anyone around the school, and you want to know...

ask us...

HOW WE FELT!

Here are the week's images!

As we know, Weka learners LOVE to share their work with others - especially when it is HIGH QUALITY work. This week, lots of children wanted to take photos of their efforts on the whiteboards.

Most of the pictures were taken by the children themselves. It's great to see the children learning to capture their learning using technology. Well done, team.

How do we know?

We have been learning about Keeping Ourselves Safe.

Last week, we talked about the Police being people that can help us keep safe. We needed to know how to recognise a police officer.

Constable Meg helped us learn the special things to look for on the police uniform:

  • The word 'Police'
  • The colour of the uniform - blue
  • Checkers on the hat or jacket
  • A special number on a police officer's sleeve
  • A special badge

Have you heard about Splash?

You may have heard about Splash, our Weka friend.

Last year, he was 'found' by my dog, Stella, in our paddock.  She brought him into her bed and we rescued him from having to be a 'dog's best friend' forever.

He has thrived and is now fully grown.  He is a pet, but lives beside my pond. He gets up to a LOT of mischief and the children in Weka love to hear about his antics.

Here are some pics to give you an idea of what he gets up to...

Little baby chick Splash...

Splash and his friend, Stella...

Splash was still young in this photo with a black beak and legs,
but he still had some blue feathers on his tummy.

As you can see, Splash is a crazy sort of pet. He is fun to have around.

Apologies...

I'm sorry if blog followers are trying to make comments and are unable to... I thought I had corrected the settings, but maybe not.

I will try to find out what is happening.  In the meantime, please just enjoy the posts and I will try to sort the issues this week.
